History of Barber CLC

Barber Community Learning Center is named in honor of George Barber (1805-79), who, with the help of his son Ohio Columbus Barber, formed the Barber Match Co. Their ‘strike-anywhere matches came into general use throughout the nation. When George Barber died in 1879, his business was making one-fifth of all the matches manufactured in the United States. His son, O.C. Barber, founded Barberton and became known as the "Match King of America." The original school building was constructed in 1929 and opened in February 1930, then later demolished in 2008. The new Barber CLC was open to students on January 4, 2010.
